Hija del Mar

I feel waves of life move through me with universal rhythm

Like an oyster, I have no eyes to see my own pearl

I form my little shell, defenseless to the ocean’s swell

Unlike an oyster, I am learning to treasure my inner self

I’m sorry oysters, if I underestimated you

As a woman, people often underestimate me

I am a daughter of the sea

I want to remind every girl

That she is a precious pearl

Within her lies the whole world

My Yoga Teacher

My yoga teacher said

May you live in the heart
May you light up the dark
May you live in the now
May you flow with the Tao
May you bless up
And never come down

My yoga teacher said,
‘Our generation is the smartest one yet, we have all the information we could ever need at our fingertips, yet we still aren’t enlightened- we can’t take 3 steps without melting down’.

True, however:

What I wanted to say to my yoga teacher after class, but didn’t due to my lingering shyness was that we are in the process of becoming enlightened, and yoga teachers are an important part of the sacred process of enlightening others, whether they realize it or not:

One by one, enlightened people share their light with others
As if passing a flame from candle to candle
The glow grows without end, multiplying infinitely.

Sharing our inner light with our fellow beings does not diminish our own glow, but builds a safety net in case our own flame is temporarily blown out- we have a friendly neighbor with a bright source to rekindle us again.

Because we have paid it forward, we have propagated a culture of generosity and abundance.

Let your light shine.

Yoga is a key part of my healing journey. It has changed my relationship with myself and with the world.

To my yoga teacher, I bow in deep gratitude for how they share their light with the world.

To all teachers everywhere across time and space; thank you, and namaste.

Unrequited Love

We all have unrequited love-
I’m not talking about that teenage heartache
That echoes off the canyon walls of self-doubt and loneliness
Though I am also talking about that
We get fooled by our human form
mistake it for our true form
Our minds get caught up in the he’s, she’s, we’s and ze’s
But the long lost love I’m talking about is with ourselves,
Specifically our highest self;
Which is the universal spirit of love that unites us all
Call it what you will,
A rose by any other name…

So stop fumbling in the mud,
Lift your gaze –
Give thanks to the shadows which allow you
To recognize the light
That is always shining
If we stop mucking around long enough to glimpse it

Our task is to lift our head out of the sand
And reunite with the love
That is abundant enough
To overflow billions of broken hearts
And then some

The cracks in your heart can be healed
By this molten love gold
Making your heart shine more brilliantly
Than it ever could before it was broken

Like those broken Japanese plates and bowls…
‘Kintsugi’ means ‘golden joinery’. Kintsukuroi means ‘golden repair’.

May you find your golden repair out there, or within, anywhere, everywhere
Healing by any modality is healing
Healing our heartbreak by recognizing our inseparableness with eternal love is our life’s mission;
it is how we finally requite our love

Alchemy

I spend my evenings dissecting out the lead bullets which you pummel into my chest throughout the day

I gingerly remove the palpable parts of your reckless barrage

Do you intend to hurt me so deeply that I must perform surgery nightly just to keep my sanity?

If I ever had any sanity to lose, that is…

Wisps of breath curl coolly around my open wounds, trying to soothe the painful sting of your attack

I am humbled by how long it takes me to heal from injuries that you were so quick to inflict

Don’t tell me you Kant follow the Golden Rule

That is the universal elixir we are all hoping for

Now I know where the true treasure is

It has been mine all along, my heart of gold

I choose to share it with the world

What will you do with your golden treasure?

Please don’t keep it buried all your life

It is already within you, yours to share whenever you wish

If only I could get this message to you somehow

I’ve sent messages in bottles before

But bottles can lead to ripples

And I’m trying to calm my water

Splash

I’m learning to dodge the lead bullets of your matrix

And melt them into gold

Treating others how you want to be treated

Is a rule that never grows old

Puzzle

I like to look at my map of the world and visualize the continents moving back together:
Puzzle pieces whose edges have been worn by time
I see how well they still fit, nook to cranny

Do you remember when you were all one? I ask the colorful curves of our earth
I wonder if the eastern shores of South America ache for the familiar embrace of the west African coast
Or if Cape Horn longs to kiss Antarctica on the lips just one more time

Traveling by map, I island-hop
I stop for a shag on the Shag Rocks and eat a sandwich on the South Sandwich Islands, both of which are east of Argentina and north of Antarctica.
Islands are the delicious crumbs of earth’s picnic

When I observe others struggling because they feel separate from All That Is,
I try to piece us back together
Though the salt water between us is blinding

I relax my gaze and see
That you fit perfectly with me
How we ever parted in the first place
Is the real puzzle
